Last Thursday Ms Brownlee took a group of students to Canaan for the first kaka release into the Abel Tasman. The birds were transferred to the aviary near the Wainui Hut on the 30th of September.
There were 4 birds released - all girls. We think there are about 5 wild kaka left in the Abel Tasman, but they are all males. So bringing in females will hopefully allow the kaka population to grow again. Females are easy targets for stoats when they are nesting, but now that there is a good trapping network in the Park we think they will survive here.
It was really cool to be at the release - it definitely felt like a special occasion!
